Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen's international correspondance
Editorial notes
Language:
The original written language of alle letters has been retained. This also means that spelling mistakes and typos have been retained in the transcription. Egon Östlund's letters are in some places written in rubbed pencil and are therefore partly illegible. Reservations are therefore made for spelling mistakes in the transcription of Östlund's replies.
Art works:
Copies of Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen's book Mindernes virksomhed from 1935 with dedications from Bjerke-Petersen to Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) and Wassily Kandinsky and two drawings with dedications from Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen to Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp respectively are not included in the database. Dalí's copy is in the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, while Kandinsky's copy (‘an meinem hochverehrten lehrer / wasily kandinsky / ergebenst von / vilh. bjerke-petersen.’) and the drawings with dedications to the Arps are in the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Original works that have turned up in connection with the project, including a pencil drawing by Hans Arp and an embroidery by Elsa Thoresen with signed and dated original drawings by Kurt Schwitters, Wilhelm Freddie, most members of the Halmstad Group (but not Waldemar Lorentzon (1899-1984)) and X-et (1899-1970), are not included in the database unless they form part of the written correspondence or are of particular significance to it . This applies, for example, to Kurt Schwitters' drawing on a thank you card to Bjerke-Petersen in 1938.
Indexing of mentioned persons:
The artist group ‘the line’ and the Halmstad Group are registered as groups, just as the individual members of the groups are registered individually. ‘linien’ and the Halmstad Group are registered where the group is mentioned by name and where reference is made to it. Individual members are only registered where they are mentioned by name.
Four individuals and one couple are not registered in the index of people, as it has not been possible to find or identify the right person. These are ‘Professor Piper’ in the letter from Rose Fried to Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen; the revolutionary ‘Skalden Norman’ in a letter dated 7 September 1935 from Egon Östlund to Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen; ‘redaktör E. Svensson’ in a letter dated 17. September 1935 from Egon Östlund to Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen; ‘Pierre Gaugin’ in a draft dated 24 August 1948 from Ib Geertsen to Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen; and ‘Balmstrands’ in a letter dated 20 November 1948 from Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen to Egon Östlund. In addition, six Swedish subscribers to the magazine ‘konkretion’ are mentioned in a letter dated 6 November 1935 from Egon Östlund to Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen. In addition, the following persons are missing complete data: Hans Eklund; Rose Fried; Louis Hahne; Erik Hjorthén; Karl Hultén; Elise Johansen; Oskar Müller-Widmann; Jørgen Neergaard; Hugh Gordon Porteus; René Renne; Claude Serbanne; Joseph Slevin; Einar Tassing; Greta Östlund; Jan Östlund.
Exclusions:
Some letters and photographs have not been photographed or scanned. Two letters from Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen to Erick Struckmann can be found in the database J.F. Willumsen's archive and are therefore not included in this database.
